The objective of this course is to provide learners the skillset to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of the various forms of horizontal surfaces in a safe manner using mechanical devices.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Operate mechanical devices in a safe manner when perform cleaning of hard floor surfaces
  • Perform basic maintenance on mechanical devices according to manufacturer’s instructions
  • Apply mechanical methods for scrubbing, burnishing, striping and waxing of hard vinyl floor surfaces
  • Identify and select the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to use when operating mechanical devices during cleaning operation

Learners are assumed to have:

  • Employability Skills (ES) Workplace Literacy level 1 and above.
  • Be able to manipulate numbers at a proficiency level equivalent to ES Workplace Numeracy level 1 and above.
  • 18 hours of classroom and practical training.
  • 2 hours of assessment including written, oral, and practical assessment.

This unit covers the following knowledge items:

  1. Types of mechanical devices to polish and/or shampoo of hard floor surfaces and/or carpets
  2. Organisational procedures relating to polishing and/or shampooing hard floor surfaces and/or carpets
  3. Types and characteristics of the different tiles and finishings on the hard floors
  4. Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for polishing or shampooing different types of floor tiles or finishes or carpets using mechanical devices
  5. Different Types of safety signages
  6. Types and proper uses of cleaning tools, equipment and supplies
  7. Types of commonly-used cleaning chemicals and their colour coding for cleaning hard floor surfaces and/or carpets
  8. Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Act
  9. Public Utilities (Water Supply) Regulation 39

  • Workers who need to identify his responsibilities under the WSH Act and to acquire basic skill sets such as hazard identification and adhering to organisation risk control procedures in the Environmental Cleaning Sector.
